What is an Esperanza plant?

Esperanza plants (Tecoma stans) are tropical plants that produce large clusters of yellow, trumpet-shaped blooms with a mild aroma. They are also called yellow alders, hardy yellow trumpets or yellow bells.

Esperanza plants flower from spring until fall and are usually grown as ornamental container plants or shrubs. They have been used medicinally. Esperanza plants are the floral emblem of the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands' official state flower.

Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees are attracted to esperanza blossoms, although honey made from the pollen or nectar is poisonous. Esperanza plants are appealing as feed when they grow in areas where animals graze.
