What is an event horizon?

The term "event horizon" refers to a boundary around a gravity well that is defined by the path of light that just fails to escape. Objects with an escape velocity greater than the speed of light form these horizons as beams of light are twisted back down toward the object.

The exact nature of the event horizon is a matter of contention among astrophysicists. According to Zeeya Merali, for the international journal Nature, scientists who study black holes are divided over which scientific model, general relativity, quantum mechanics or a unification of the two, governs the behavior of light at the event horizon.
