An example of culture shock is when someone struggles to adapt to the dining customs of another culture, such as spending hours everyday eating a meal with family members. If someone is used to a fast-paced lifestyle, it may seem foreign to devote such a large portion of the day to dining. Another example of culture shock is feeling uncomfortable with a group's closeness and intimacy with strangers when someone is used to people keeping their distance.

Culture shock occurs when someone experiences confusing or troubling thoughts when living in a different culture. Those suffering from culture shock may feel nervous, depressed, anxious, angry or withdrawn. With time, people can learn to combine the new culture's ideals with traits from their previous experiences so that they are more comfortable in their new surroundings.
