A lab write up is a report explaining a scientific experiment and its results. A standard lab write up includes the following sections: I. Introduction/Purpose of the experiment II. Statement of the hypothesis III. Materials used IV. Methods/Procedures V. Observations/Data collected VI. Results/Discussion VII. Conclusion
The following sample lab write up demonstrates how the different sections come together to complete a report.
I. Introduction/Purpose:
This experiment will test the theory that gravity causes objects to fall toward the center of the Earth when they are dropped.
II. Hypothesis:
A soccer ball will fall to the floor when rolled off of a table with a surface 4 feet high,.
III. Materials:
a. Soccer ball
b. Table with a surface height of 4 feet
IV. Methods/Procedure:
The soccer ball was placed on the surface of the table and then pushed so that it rolled off of the table.
V. Observations/Data:
When the soccer ball rolled off the edge of the table, it fell, hit the ground, and bounced three times. It then rolled on the floor until it came to a stop.
VI. Results/Discussion:
Our observations supported the hypothesis that when a soccer ball is rolled off of a table 4 feet high, it will fall to the floor.
VII. Conclusion:
This experiment showed that when a soccer ball was rolled off the surface of a table at 4 feet high it dropped to the ground. This result supports the theory that gravity causes objects to fall toward the center of the Earth when they are dropped.
