Examples of mixtures include sand and sugar, alcohol and water, and flour and sugar. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances in which each substance retains its own chemical identity.
A mixture can be homogeneous or heterogeneous. A homogeneous mixture is a mixture which has the same composition and appearance throughout it. These mixtures are often referred to as solutions. The term solution is used most often when at least one of the components is a liquid. An example of a homogeneous mixture in the solid phase is a metal alloy. A heterogeneous mixture contains different substances that stay physically separate.
