What are examples of expository texts?

Examples of expository texts include scientific books and journals, encyclopedias, textbooks, directions, newspapers and biographies. Expository text should be written in a way that informs, describes or explains something to the reader.

There are generally five types of expository texts which include compare and contrast, cause and effect, listing, sequence and problem solving. Each of these has a place in the types of literature meant to educate the reader.

When reading expository texts, it often helps to make notes, highlight important sections and question what is being read. These and other tricks help to better understand the material and maximize comprehension.
