A PIN, or personal identification number, is a series of numbers, used much like a password, especially with credit and debit cards, as well as mobile phones. Many PINs are four digits.

According to one analysis of PINs, despite being intended to be a unique four-digit code to verify the identity of the user, as many as one in 10 people use "1-2-3-4" as their PIN.

In addition to mobile phones and credit and debit cards, other uses for PINs include Electronic Benefit Transfer cards used for SNAP or food stamp payments and as security measure to access a Federal Student Aid account with the Department of Education.
