The 2015 models of the BMW Z4, Lexus IS C, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG are examples of hardtop convertibles. This type of convertible offers protection from the cold weather, but the retraction of the hardtop can reduce the back passenger and trunk space.

In 1922, a manually operated retractable hardtop prototype was crafted, but it was never actually produced. Peugeot manufactured the first power-operated retractable hardtop for the 402 Eclipse Decapotable in 1935. Convertible hardtops are made up of steel, plastic or aluminum, and have two to five rigid sections connected to the trunk lid with two hinges.
