Some examples of oldies country songs include Johnny Cashs I Walk the Line, Hank Williams Im So Lonesome I Could Cry and Patsy Clines Crazy. These classic country songs were both popular and highly influential.
One of Johnny Cashs best known songs, I Walk the Line was first released on Sun Records in 1956. Written while Cash was touring through East Texas, the song is a romantic assurance of faithfulness to his then-wife Vivian Cash. Although Cash wasnt always true to his word, the songs message has resonated throughout the succeeding decades, and I Walk the Line is one of country musics most popular tunes.
Though Hank Williams career was brief, his influence was immeasurable, and the 1949 single Im So Lonesome I Could Cry is one of his most enduring songs. Lamenting his failing marriage to wife Audrey, the song conjures up some of Williams most vivid images, such as a whippoorwill too blue to fly. Countless artists have reinterpreted the song, including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Nick Cave.
Patsy Clines iconic 1961 hit Crazy was actually written by Willie Nelson and passed to Cline by her husband. While she initially deemed the song too slow, she nevertheless recorded vocals over it, and the powerful performance became one of Clines best known songs. A staple of country music, the song was even used in Ross Perots 1992 presidential campaign.
