Some examples of optometry equipment include the keratometer, phoroptor and chart projector. These instruments are used by optometrists and ophthalmologists to diagnose certain eye conditions and test vision.
A keratometer, also known as an ophthalmometer, measures the curvature of the eye's cornea. This optical device diagnoses the presence of astigmatism and sometimes assists in performing surgical procedures. An optometrist uses a phoroptor to test an individual's vision. Specifically, different lenses measure an individual's refractive error, which determines her eyeglass prescription. A chart projector projects symbols and letters for individuals to read through a series of lenses during an eye examination.
