A few examples of phospholipids include phosphatidylinositol, plasmalogens and sphingomyelins. A phospholipid is a molecule containing one or more phosphate groups and a glycerol bound to two fatty acids.

Phosphatidylinositol is a phospholipid present in eukaryotic cells. It is involved in signal transduction. Sometimes referred to as inositide, phosphatidylinositol consists of a phosphatidic acid combined with inositol that is a precursor to cellular signals. Phosopholiids are major components of cell membranes. All phospholipids share a common structure that consists of a polar head, or a charged polar group, and a non-polar fatty acid tail that is linked by a glycerol linkage.
