Shrubs that provide shade and that can be used to shade other plants include eucalyptus and California lilac. Oregon grape and cotoneaster are also used for shade.
Eucalyptus, though native to Australia, tends to do well in many climates in the United States. The California lilac and the cotoneaster are both shade-giving plants that grow quickly. They are tolerant to drought and provide shade for small spaces. Cotoneaster should be grown with caution, however, since it can become invasive and take over the landscape. Oregon grape is a fast-growing shrub that produces berries that are edible. It is an evergreen shrub sometimes referred to as serviceberry.
