What are examples of temperate grassland vegetation?

Purple needlegrass, buffalo grass, asters, clovers, cottonwoods and willows are all types of vegetation that may grow in a temperate grassland. Temperate grasslands are composed primarily of grasses. Flowers grow among the grasses, and a few trees may grow in river valleys.
Relatively low amounts of precipitation make it hard for large plants to grow in the temperate grassland. Taller grasses dominate areas with more precipitation, while shorter grasses are found in the drier areas. The large amount of grasses supply a steady diet to the numerous herbivores living in the temperate grasslands. The veldts of Africa and the plains of North America are temperate grasslands.
