The most expensive fish to eat was a 222-kilogram bluefin tuna. It was sold at Tokyo's Tsukiji market for ?155.4 million ($1.8 million) at Japan's annual New Year auction in January 2013. This was equivalent to $8,000 per kilogram.
Another bluefin tuna held the record the previous year. It was purchased by Kiyoshi Kimura, who owns a sushi restaurant in Japan. The fish was worth ?472,125 ($736,000).
Japanese people consume up to 80 percent of the world's declining tuna stock. Environmentalists are alarmed that these increasing prices are one of the indications of further depletion of bluefin tuna and other fish.
