What is a Export Control Classification Number?

The Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) is a five character alpha-numeric designation used on the Commerce Control List (CCL) identifying dual-use items for export control purposes, according to the Bureau of Industry and Security website. The number is assigned categorically based on the nature of the product itself.

ECCNs are listed in the CCL, and are divided into 10 categories. Each category is then further divided into five unique product groups. If an item is not on the CCL, it is designated as EAR99, and as such does not require a license, as referenced from the Bureau of Industry and Security.
