What do eye infections look like?

Redness of the eyes or the eyelids and swelling are some visible symptoms of eye infections. A bacterial infection can cause a gray or white sore on the cornea. Yellow, green, bloody, white or creamy discharges generally indicate infections, especially when accompanied by pain and swelling.

Fungal keratitis produces excessive tearing or discharge from the eye. Blepharitis typically produces frothy tears, red and swollen eyelids, and red eyes or crusts on the eyelashes after sleep. The chickenpox virus may cause herpes zoster opthalmicus, which can result in small blisters around the eye, swollen eyelids and red eyes. Acanthamoeba keratitis is an infection that produces red eyes and excessive tearing.
