Fabergé eggs were created in Russia by Peter Carl Fabergé and his company between 1885 and 1917. As noted on the Fabergé website, the jeweled eggs were created for the Russian tsars Alexander III and his son, Nicholas II, as Easter gifts. The collection is called the Imperial Faberge eggs.
Fabergé's creations commemorated the Romanov dynasty and events of the Imperial Court. Alexander III presented an egg to his wife every Easter until 1885. Nicholas II continued the tradition beginning in 1895, presenting an egg to his wife and mother annually. Fabergé made 50 eggs, of which 42 have survived.
