A facet block injection is an injection of steroid medication and/or a numbing anesthetic into the facet joints located between sections of the spinal vertebrae. The procedure both provides pain relief and aides in the diagnosis of the locations and causes of pain, according to Spine-health. The injection often reduces inflammation and tissue swelling around the facet joint space. If a patient has complete pain relief after an injection of a numbing agent, the source of pain can be determined and specialized treatment can be prescribed.
