For the 2014 school year, a 4-year-old child may start pre-kindergarten (known as transitional kindergarten) in Los Angeles, Calif., if he or she will be turning 5 between September 2, 2014 and December 2, 2014. The dates vary slightly every school year.
The Los Angeles County Department of Education has implemented "Transitional Kindergarten" to fill the role of pre-kindergarten by enrolling students in school at a younger age than traditional kindergarten. A child may be enrolled in this program as long as he or she will have his or her fifth birthday during the first semester of the school year.
