What are some common family tartan patterns from Scotland?

Some of the most common and well known family (or clan) tartans include Stuart, McDonald, Scott, Campbell and Gordon. These tartans are common because their clans are so large or because very famous people or families come from these clans.

MacDonell or MacDonald of Clanranald is the largest Highland clan and thus the various tartans associated with the clan are seen often. Clan Gordon is quite large also, with 157 branches. The Royal Stewart tartan of the House of Stuart is worn by the regimental pipers of the Scots Guards. Its white squares and red and green stripes are easy to recognize and are often mimicked in various fabrics.
