According to the Texas Education Agency, a person cannot drop out of school in the state until the age of 18. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.
Students are not required to attend public school in Texas if they are going to private or parochial schools. Home-schooled students are also exempt. Seventeen-year-olds are allowed to leave school if they are enrolled in or have successfully completed a GED program. If students are 16 and have been identified by the court as truants, they are allowed to enroll in GED programs, as well. Students who are 17 when they receive their high school diplomas are not forced to stay in school.
