How long does it take for the umbilical cord to fall off?

It takes approximately one to two weeks for a baby's umbilical cord stump to fall off, according to the American Pregnancy Association. The umbilical cord's stump, which is approximately a half inch to an inch, dries up before completely falling off of the baby.
During the first week or two of a baby's life, the umbilical cord stump needs to be cleaned, dried and cared for daily. Pediatricians with the American Pregnancy Association recommend sponge baths to avoid getting the umbilical cord stump wet until it falls off or dabbing the stump gently with a cotton ball of rubbing alcohol to keep it clean.
