How wide can a baby gate extend?

Though baby gates are typically the width of a doorway or hallway--approximately 4 feet wide--some manufacturers make baby gates that extend up to 6 feet wide. This is done with extension pieces that are added to the base gate, such that it can also span shorter distances.

A typical baby gate has a span range of about 26 to 46 inches, or from just over 2 feet to just under 4; therefore, extra-wide gates exceed this distance by at least a foot. Some extended options are available in various designs that allow them to reach as wide as double the width of a typical gate. The intention is to span wider hallways or larger doors and arches that may be in a home.
