Henri Matisse, 1869-1954, was a famous painter in the 1920s. He was a French painter, sculptor and lithographer. Reference.com cites that, along with Pablo Picasso, Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period.
Matisse originally set out to study law. However, during an illness in 1890, he took up painting and never returned to law.
Matisse's first exhibit in 1896 was unsuccessful. However, his 1905 painting known as "The Green Line" featured his pure primary color as the significant structural element and the artistic movement of fauvism was born with Matisse as its leader. By 1909, Matisse had developed worldwide fame. His notoriety and worked continued through his death.
