How far apart do you plant broccoli?

Young broccoli plants should be planted in rows with one to two feet between plants. Rows should have at least two feet between them. Spacing is less important when planting broccoli seeds because broccoli plants are usually started indoors and transplanted outdoors after six to eight weeks.

A mature broccoli plant can be up to three feet tall, with leaves spreading two to three feet across. Gardeners should plant broccoli plants farther apart when growing a large central head of broccoli. If a gardener wants to have a higher yield of smaller heads, broccoli can be planted closer together. This will increase yield at the expense of size.
