How far did Jesus carry the cross?

The exact distance that Jesus carried the cross on his way to be crucified is unknown due to the changes that have taken place in Jerusalem since the first century. It is also unclear as to whether or not Christ actually carried the physical cross.

Matthew 27:32 states that a man named Simon from Cyrene was chosen from the crowd to carry the cross for Jesus. In all artwork dealing with the subject until 1100 A.D., Simon is depicted as carrying the cross behind Jesus.

After Jesus was taken prisoner in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was taken to the Praetorium. His last walk was from the Praetorium to an area just outside of Jerusalem called "Golgotha," which translates to "place of the skulls."
