Who helped Jesus carry his cross?

The person who helped Jesus carry his cross is said to be Simon of Cyrene. He is mentioned doing this in the Synoptic Gospels and the Fifth Station of the Stations of the Cross.
Simon was a man from Cyrene, Libya. He could have been a member of the Jewish community there. Since many Jews had come to Jerusalem for the Passover ceremonies, Simon was probably in the city for this reason. However, Simon might not have been Jewish.
Some people believe that Simon was a follower of Jesus and was glad to carry the cross, while others believe he was a bystander who was pulled out of the crowd by the Roman soldiers.
