Who crucified Jesus?

Jesus of Nazareth was crucified by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who served under Emperor Tiberius. Jesus was killed because he claimed to be the King of the Jews. However, Pilate didn't wish to take responsibility for the crucifixion and sent Jesus to his death reluctantly.
According to the gospels, Pilate did not consider Jesus to be guilty of conspiracy against Rome. Pilate sought to release him from custody, but the crowds demanded Jesus' execution. A block of limestone discovered in 1961, known as the Pilate Stone, confirms that Pilate was a prefect of Judaea from 26 to 36 A.D., during the time of the death of Jesus.
