Who were the two people crucified next to Jesus?

According to the Biblical accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus, the two men crucified with Him were simple criminals who had received a death sentence. The Bible story doesn't name them, but rather shows the interaction between the two and Jesus.
The account, a story that is intended to teach love and forgiveness, has one criminal mocking Jesus by stating that he should save himself, and them. The other man scolded the first, implying that while he and the other criminal deserved their fate, Jesus was innocent and did not. Jesus in turn promised eternal salvation to the second criminal.
