The Bible notes that two thieves were crucified at the same time as Jesus, one at his left side and one at his right side. The book of Matthew notes that both thieves mocked Jesus and defied Jesus to save himself.
During the hours that Jesus and the thieves hung on the cross, it appears that one thief had a change of heart. The book of Luke notes that one thief acknowledged that Jesus had done nothing to justify his crucifixion. The thief, known as St. Dismas or "the good thief," asks Jesus to remember him in heaven. Luke notes that Jesus promises the thief a place in heaven.
