How fast do boxwoods grow?

The maximum growth rate of boxwood is about 12 inches per year. Left untended, the plant eventually reaches heights of 5 to 15 feet with an equal spread.

Boxwood is used for hedges, foundation plantings, individual specimens and topiary. The plant can tolerate both full sun and full shade but prefers intermediate conditions. It needs well-drained soil that is no more than slightly acidic or alkaline. Boxwood tolerate both drought and transplanting well. The plants benefits from having dead branches removed to allow for air circulation but should not be pruned until the danger of frost has passed. Boxwood is winter hardy in zones 5 through 8.
