How fast can a chicken run?

A chicken can run as quickly as 9 mph, but this varies depending on the breed of chicken. There are over 150 different chicken breeds that all have different running capabilities.

The smallest breed of chicken, the Malaysian Serama bantam, is only 15 to 20 cm tall, so it can't run as quickly. The longest recorded flight distance for a chicken was only 301.5 feet, and the longest recorded flight time was 13 seconds. These poor flying statistics are the reason that chickens need to be able to run rather quickly. Another flightless bird, Ostriches, can run at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.
