How fast can zebras run?

Zebras run at speeds of up to 35 to 40 miles per hour with great stamina. Their speed is primarily used to escape from predators such as lions and hyenas.

Zebras are social animals, spending their time in groups ranging from small harems to large herds. When an animal is attacked, other members of the group often circle the wounded in an effort to drive off the predator. It is thought that an abundance of the striped herbivores close together make it difficult for predators to single out a lone animal within a large herd. The stripes also work to their advantage by distorting a predator's sense of distance at dawn and dusk.
