In 1974, Ryan earned a place in the "Guinness Book of World Records" for fastest pitch recorded when he threw a 100.9 mph fastball against the Detroit Tigers. The record currently belongs to Aroldis Chapman who threw a 105.1 mph pitch in 2010 against the San Diego Padres. Nolan Ryan currently holds the Major League Baseball records for most career strikeouts (5,714), most career no-hitters (7) and holds the single-season strikeout record with 383 in 1973.
