Fat quarter projects are quilting projects using fabric that is cut into unit of measurements known as “fat quarters.” A fat quarter is made by cutting a half yard in half again vertically, usually measuring 18 x 22 inches.

Fat quarter fabric is named from being a quarter of the size of traditional fabric, a full yard. It is cut vertically at the fold, making it what quilters describe as a “fat” cut of fabric. The extra width provided lets quilters create a larger variety of quilt patterns than traditional fabric. Fat quarter fabric is considered the most common specialty cut available, sold in either individual pieces or in bundles.
