An FBI background check is an identification record that includes an arrest history, fingerprints when relevant, a Social Security number and a history of employment. Numerous companies require a federal background check before hiring a new employee.
Besides employment, some of the most common reasons for an organization to require a federal background check include overseas travel, adoption, housing and licensing. The background check is also known as the Identity History Summary or a rap sheet and includes information about any previous arrests or lack thereof. Individuals need to request an Identity History Summary in person and give it to the organization that requires it.
