The coriander plant, also known as cilantro, resembles parsley with its thin stems and fringed green leaves. It is an aromatic herb that grows quickly. It grows best in full or partial sun and in spring or fall when the weather is cooler.
Though the Latin name is Coriandrum sativum, "coriander" refers to the seeds, and "cilantro" is the name for the leaves. Both seeds and leaves have uses as flavorings in salsas, chilies and curries.
Nutritional benefits of cilantro include vitamins A, B1, C, E, and K. It also has trace values of other B vitamins and the minerals iron, calcium, magnesium, copper and manganese. The coriander seed has a history of use as a digestive aid and in reducing inflammation.
