Sending money online can be free or can have a small fee attached, depending on the method used. PayPal charges no fees for funds sent from a U.S. bank account. Funds sent from a debit or credit card incur a fee of 2.9 percent plus 30 cents, according to PayPal.

Western Union allows users to send money from their bank accounts to the receiver's bank account or mobile phone. It also can arrange for overseas foreign exchange transfers and for sending money to prison inmates, explains Western Union. The company charges a small fee for each transfer and provides an online calculator to estimate the fees due.
