There is no specific name female wolves, but sometimes they are referred to as she-wolves. Together with the alpha male, the female leads the wolf pack.
The alpha male and female wolves in a pack are the only ones that breed to produce new pups, and they get to eat first at kills. Female wolves give birth to their litters of pups in spring after a gestation period of about 63 days. Female wolves give birth to one to nine offspring at a time, but the average litter size is four. The female wolf stays with the newborn pups in the den while the other adult wolves hunt and bring back food for them.
