What is a femoral hernia surgery?

Femoral hernia surgery is performed to correct a medium- to large-sized bulge near the groin and thigh from a part of intestine pushing against the femoral canal, according to Healthline. Fermoral hernia surgery is done as either a laparoscopic or open surgery.
Correcting a femoral hernia requires pushing the intestine tissue back in, sewing the weakened area of the abdominal wall closed, and strengthening it with a piece of mesh, states MedlinePlus. It is necessary to repair femoral hernias even if symptoms are not present. If this is not done, the hernia is likely to become incarcerated or strangulated, meaning it becomes trapped in the hernia, a condition that requires emergency surgery.
