To fill out a check, write the date and name of the payee, the amount of the check in numerical form, and the amount in word form. Sign the check, and outline the purpose of the check in the "memo" section.
- Write the date and payee
Jot down the date on top of the check. Next to the "pay to the order of" section, write the name of the person or entity you are paying.
- Write the amount
In the box section, write the amount in numerical form. Begin with the first number in dollar form, and follow with the remaining numbers in cent form. Jot down the first digit of the amount at the far left corner of the box to prevent someone from adding extra digits.
- Write the number in word form
Spell out the amount in the "dollars" line of the check. Write the cents in fraction form. For instance, if the amount is $9.15, write down "Nine dollars and 15/100" on the line. Draw a line from the end of the fraction nearly to the box with the dollar amount to stop anyone from writing extra amounts on the check.
- Sign the check
Sign the check. Under the "memo" section, write down the reason for the check, if desired. Include any relevant information the payee may have asked for, such as an account or driver's license number.
