The white cream filling in between the two chocolate cookies in Oreos is mainly made up of powdered sugar, vanilla extract, water, granulated sugar and vegetable shortening. Nabisco, the company that produces Oreo cookies uses other secret ingredients to create the signature taste that many people love.
When Oreo cookies were first made back in the 1920s, Nabisco used pork fat to make the delicious cream filling. Oreos became kosher in December of 1997 after popular demand.
When Oreo cookies first came out, they looked different than they do now. The cookies featured a wreath around the edges of the cookie with the name OREO in the cookie’s center. They were once sold for only 25 cents per pound.
