When was the first 747 airplane flown?

The first flight of the Boeing 747 took place on Feb. 9, 1969. The aircraft entered commercial service on Jan. 22, 1970. The original version of the 747 was the first wide-bodied airliner to be produced and had two and half times the capacity as a 707.

The 747 was so large that Boeing had to build a new production plant large enough to assemble the aircraft. The original 747 was 225 feet long and as tall as a six-story building. The 747 was christened by the First Lady of the United States on Jan. 17, 1970. By 2015, some 1,512 747s have been constructed.
