Who was the first African-American Supreme Court justice?

Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American Supreme Court justice. He was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson and approved by Congress on Oct. 2, 1967. Marshall served on the Supreme Court for 24 years.

Justice Marshall graduated from Howard University after being denied admission to the University of Maryland due to his race. His first major court win was against the University of Maryland for denying admittance to another African-American. He was the Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals, where he made over 150 decisions regarding immigration and search and seizure rights. Justice Marshall passed away in 1993, two years after retiring from public service.
