What was the first animal to land on the moon?

As of April 2014, no animals other than human beings have landed on the moon. The first humans to land on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. Armstrong was the first human to step on the moon.

Although no other animals have landed on the moon, many animals have gone into space. The first animal in space was a dog named Laika. Laika entered orbit on Nov. 3, 1957, on the Russian rocket Sputnik 2. Since that time, monkeys, chimpanzees, mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, cats, spiders, frogs, insects, tortoises, newts, fish and earthworms have all traveled into space. Most animals are brought into space as research subjects.
