What is the slowest-moving land animal?

The three-toed sloth has the dubious distinction of being the slowest-moving land animal. It takes a sloth one month to cover a distance of one-half mile.

Three-toed sloths are found in rain forests in Central and South America. The animals, which weigh 8 to 9 pounds, have long, shaggy, light brown fur that is often covered in blue-green algae. Their bodies are well-adapted to their tree-living lifestyle. They have long arms, and all four feet have three curved claws, not toes, that let them grip branches and hang from trees. They seldom leave their leafy homes. However, once a week they slowly descend to the forest floor to eliminate waste.
