The first African-American Miss USA beauty pageant winner was Carole Anne-Marie Gist. The Miss USA pageant is not the same as the Miss America beauty pageant. The Miss USA beauty pageant is used to select the U.S. entrant to the Miss Universe beauty pageant.
Carole Gist won the Miss USA title on March 2, 1990. She was the first contestant from Michigan to win the title, and she received more than $200,000 in cash and prizes for winning. In the Miss Universe pageant, she placed first runner-up to Miss Norway. Carole Gist is of African-American and Cherokee heritage. She was born on May 8, 1969.
