The first branch of City Bank was located in New York, New York, and was founded in 1812. City Bank has since been renamed Citibank and operates branches in over 100 countries throughout the world.
City Bank of New York's first president was Samuel Osgood. The establishment became the largest bank in the United States in 1894 and claimed the title of the largest international bank by the 1930s. The bank changed its name from City Bank to Citibank in 1976. Citibank merged with Travelers Group Inc. in 1998 to create Citigroup, which was the largest financial organization in the world at the time.
