The first universally acknowledged car was invented in 1885. The gasoline-powered, three-wheeled automobile was created in Germany by Karl Friedrich Benz. The four-wheeled automobile design followed in 1886, invented by Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach.

Theoretical car-like designs were first recorded in the 15th century by Leonardo da Vinci. The first known self-propelled precursor to the automobile was built in 1769 in France; Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot's invention was a steam-powered military tractor, not a true car.

The first commercially viable car marketed in the United States was introduced in 1893 by Charles and Frank Duryea. The Duryea brothers founded the first automobile manufacturer in the United States.
