Indian Motorcycles manufactured its first prototype in 1901, along with two additional production units. In 1902, Indian Motorcycles began selling to the public, featuring a chain-driven drive train and streamlined styling. By 1908, the Massachusetts-based company manufactured the loop-frame design that it still uses for modern-day motorcycles.

Polaris Industries purchased Indian Motorcycles in 2011. As of 2015, it manufactures six different motorcycle models. The Indian Chief Classic, Chief Dark Horse and Chief Vintage are cruiser-style motorcycles featuring Indian's Thunder Stroke 111 engine with 119 foot-pounds of torque. Indian's Chieftain and Roadmaster models place the Thunder Stroke 111 engine on a touring motorcycle frame. The lightweight Indian Scout features a 69-cubic-inch V-twin engine and modern styling.
